He specialises in Chinese art and also features Japanese and Indian items in his stock and champions the “lovely collectable items that can still be had for quite modest sums”. The Emporium, in Hungerford’s High Street, features a mix of dealers offering furniture, china, jewellery and more in a three-storey 17th century beamed building.

Davison started out as a teenager dealing in Portobello Road. He has published three books, the most recent of which, The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics (2013), has sold out in its second reprint.

He is now planning another expanded and revised version of the book with a greater focus on 20th century, particularly Republican period, ceramics. It is planned for release in 2018. The dealer, 74, says: “I should really be retired, but who can stop the hunt for nice items or the pleasure of dealing?”
