Each measuring 3½ x 2¾in (9 x 7cm) in their original ebonised wood hanging frames (very much in the style of a silhouette or miniature), they have printed pink paper labels to the reverse reading Beard’s Photographic Portraits. Taken at the Institution, Top of Park Street, Bristol. Pencil inscriptions name the sitters as Mr & Mrs Samuel Palmer, believed to be the parents of the Liberal MP, John Hindle Palmer.

Estimated at £400-600, they sold to a specialist UK collector bidding via the internet for £1800 at Michael Bowman’s (20.5% buyer’s premium) sale at Chudleigh Town Hall, Devon, on January 28.
