Among Hugo’s work on offer this spring is this ink on paper study of 1855 in Aguttes’ sale of paintings and works on paper at Drouot on March 27. It depicts the ruined building known at the Hermitage on Jersey, where he lived from 1852-55 during his political exile.

The 7½ x 8½in (19 x 22 cm) work, which is signed and dated lower right, also has a written dedication to a Dr Terrier, to whom Hugo gave the drawing in thanks for looking after his daughter Adele. It has an estimate of €80,000-120,000.
