Rare bronze
An Athlete struggling with a Python, a rare bronze reduction of the famous full-scale work dated 1877 by Frederic Leighton, is estimated at £50,000-80,000 at Bonhams. It has been in the possession of a family in Cheshire since it was acquired at a country house auction in 1934 for 57 shillings and 17 pence.

The inaugural Important Design Sale in Bond Street on April 5 follows a format employed by other London salerooms, bringing together top-quality objects across a wide range of different periods and collecting disciplines.

The sale places a pair of Italian giltwood portego sofas (estimate £40,000-60,000) alongside a pair of George III wine coolers by Paul Storr (estimate £40,000-60,000) and The Starfish Dancer by Demetre Chiparus (estimate £100,000-150,000).

Bonhams’ UK head of decorative arts, Mark Wilkinson, is curating the sale.

“Modern collectors and interior designers want to mix styles, makers and periods.

“We aim to satisfy this growing demand, and to attract buyers who may not necessarily be collectors of a specific genre but are interested in purchasing 500 years of excellence in furniture and the decorative arts.”
