Made from ebony, with a spring pendulum and alarm, it stars in Dreweatts & Bloomsbury’s Clocks, Barometers & Scientific Instruments sale on March 28 in Donnington Priory.

It measures 13in (32cm) high and was acquired directly by a private vendor from the collection of the Nielsen family.

East was one of the first assistants of the Clockmakers’ Company, the world’s oldest surviving horological institution, established by royal charter in 1631 during Charles I’s reign.

He went on to become master of the Clockmakers’ Company before being appointed chief clockmaker to Charles II in November 1660.
