His speciality was portrayals of dramatic events in exotic surroundings, which were highly sought after by members of the European aristocracy and also found favour with English royalty. Works by Raden Saleh can be found in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
His 12 x 16in (30 x 40cm) canvas Arabian Rider Being Attacked by a Lion is thought to date from the late 1840s, when the artist was in Dresden. Shortly afterwards Raden Saleh returned to his home country, where he is considered the father of modern Indonesian painting.
Van Ham is expecting €30,000-50,000 for this painting. The saleroom has achieved several six-figure results for works by the artist and since 2008 holds the auction record of €1.6m (£1.28m) for the canvas In Grave Danger from 1842.
