The annual event is held in the Pavilions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showground and is fully booked this year with 45 exhibitors. One of them is David Harvey of WR Harvey & Sons. Among his stock is a bookcase that he first sold during another Harrogate fair in 1977.

The c.1705 double-dome top bureau bookcase is 6ft 8in (2.03m) tall and features carved giltwood finials and a well with secret compartments.

When Harvey offered it 40 years ago, the bookcase made £12,500. Now, for his first appearance at the Cooper Events’ fair, the piece is offered at £50,000.

Returning exhibitors this year include Rowles Fine Art, diamond jewellery specialist Greenstein Antiques, Bottlebrook Antiques bringing 18th-20th century porcelain as well as epergnes, and tea caddy and box dealer Peter Barnham Antiques.

“We are looking forward to seeing an even wider range of pieces with John Newton’s range of mid-20th century German pottery,” says fair director Sue Ede.
