Born Romain de Tirtoff in Russia, he later moved to Paris where he designed covers for Harper’s Bazaar, costumes and sets for the theatre and was a figurehead for Art Deco generally.
From November 15-30, more than 100 of his gouaches will be displayed at Grosvenor Gallery.
The works comprised a major part of the private collection of Eric and Salome Estorick, who founded the gallery in 1960. Many of the same works featured in the exhibition Erté: an Art Deco Genius at the Hermitage in St Petersburg last year.
“Erté was an extraordinarily delicate artist working from small-scale maquettes to stage designs,” says Michael Estorick, son of Eric and Salome.
“This is a commercial show but it’s also an opportunity to see many works by the artist all in one place.”
Prices in the exhibition range from £1000-25,000 for most pieces, though Erté’s distinctive Alphabet Series is priced at £3m.
The show coincides with the 125th year since the artist’s birth and the 150th anniversary of Harper’s Bazaar.
