Family of mammoth skeletons on offer at Summers Place Auctions’ 5th Evolution Sale on November 21, offered as single lot estimated at £250,000-400,000.
In the Siberian city of Tomsk in 2002, a group of construction workers discovered large animal bones while digging on a building site.
An expedition organised by the company Trias Geo identified them as a family of mammoth skeletons: a male and a female mammoth, a teenage daughter and an almost complete one-year-old baby – one of only two ever found.
Now, Trias Geo has consigned the group to Summers Place Auctions’ 5th Evolution Sale on November 21, offered as single lot estimated at £250,000-400,000.
It is thought the family died as a result of a natural disaster at the end of the Pleistocene period, around 12,000-16,000 years ago.
