Among them was a set of three privately consigned pictures of Bundoran in County Donegal by the famous Irish songwriter and entertainer William Percy French (1854-1920).

The 7 x 10in (17 x 25cm) signed works drew interest from Ireland, selling to an Irish buyer for £2900 against a modest £300-500 estimate.

French’s watercolours have become increasingly desirable on the secondary market over the last two decades, with both Whyte’s of Dublin and Christie’s achieving over £40,000 for his sketchbooks and watercolours.

A group of watercolours by the Cumbrian artist Edward H Thompson (1866-1945) was also the object of keen bidding at Tennants. All 12 works, split across six lots, had come from a private vendor in the north-west and sold for multi-estimate sums to total £8200.

The financial highlight was a trio of Lakeland watercolours, featuring a rare scene of figures skating on a frozen lake pictured. The group easily bettered a £250-350 guide to sell to a private buyer in the north of England for £2500.
