Just the first two parts and a portion of a third had been printed before the work was abandoned by the author, who apparently found the project too costly. However, manuscripts survive in the British Library and in 1905 an edition based on them was issued by the Roxburghe Club.
Bound in modern morocco, an example of Twelfe Night… as printed over 20pp of the 1632, second folio edition of the works of Shakespeare was one previously owned by Harry Secombe. Sold by a descendant, it made £1700.
An 1893 copy of Charles Gore’s The Incarnation of the Son of God, a controversial theological lecture that in 1896 Charles Dodgson gave and inscribed to his brother, Edwin, sold at £1000.
Among several well-bound sets offered in Cambridge, a six-volume Russian language edition of the works of Pushkin, published in St Petersburg in 1870-71 and here bound in full morocco by Chambolle Duru, sold at £1200.
The simple, typographic dust jacket was chipped and partially discoloured and the endpapers a little stained, but one of 350, doubly signed large paper copies of Winnie-the-Pooh of 1926 offered in the Cambridge sale was unopened. It sold at £3800.
