A Nobel prize-winner’s gold medal awarded to British scientist Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood is estimated at $200,000-400,000 at Julien’s Auctions in California on November 17.
The 23 ct gold metal weighing 202gms was given to Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood as a joint award in 1956 with Nikolay Semenov of the USSR, for their researches into the mechanism of chemical reactions, specifically that between hydrogen and oxygen.
Hinshelwood, who was educated in Canada and at Balliol College, Oxford, lived in a small flat in Chelsea from 1905 until he died in 1967. In 1976 his medal was purchased by a coin dealer in Los Angeles for $15,000.
Only eight Nobel Prize medals have ever been offered for sale, including this example which is estimated at $200,000-400,000.
