A large collection of Indian and Himalayan sculpture assembled some 40 years ago will be offered at Surrey saleroom John Nicholson’s on April 18.

The 67-lot group was put together between the 1950s-‘70s by the late collector Andrew Solomon. He bought mainly from auctions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s and Indian galleries in London, and meticulously recorded all his purchases and invoices.

The financial star at £30,000-50,000 is this Chola bronze figure of the four-armed Hindu god Siva Vinadhara, purchased from Sotheby’s London in 1971. Dating from the c.12th century, the 18in (45.5cm) high piece originates from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which flourished artistically under Chola rule.
