A group of medals awarded to the Anglo-Jewish socialite Gladys, Lady Swaythling (1879-1965), for her philanthropic work will go under the hammer at Dreweatts on August 14 in Donnington Priory, Newbury.
Married to Lord Swaythling, a financier, political activist and prominent member of the British Jewish community, Lady Swaythling was known for her voluntary and philanthropic efforts. She worked with a variety of charities including the Red Cross and forged close links with the Japanese government from the First World War until the outbreak of the Second World War.
She became the 71st recipient of the Order of the Sacred Crown, third class, an order established by Emperor Meiji in 1888 to reward Japanese and foreign ladies for meritorious service. Made from gold and enamel with pearls and featuring a bar signed Spink & Son, the medal is among the rarer entries in the group.
The collection, which includes correspondence, has been consigned by her family (it does not feature her CBE and Order of St John medals).

A collection of military uniforms and accessories belonging to a Nottinghamshire family will be offered at Stroud Auctions in Gloucestershire on August 8-10.
Lying untouched in trunks for more than 150 years, the collection has been consigned by the Whites, whose lineage goes back to the 11th century. It ranges from full-dress uniforms to military hats, belts and buttons dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Most of the items in the collection are tagged with a description of the original owner and the regiment, which was partially undertaken in 1977 by the National Army Museum and Captain Richard White RN.
This Victorian 16th Lancers officer’s chapka above was owned by the 3rd Baronet, Sir Thomas Woollaston White (1828-1907), and is guided at £2500-5000.
This 14in (36cm) high Daum oviform glass vase above is among the highlights of Whitton Auctions’ August 9-10 sale in Honiton, Devon.
Consigned from a private local vendor, the Nancy-made vase features clear glass teardrops to its long tapering neck and is etched with red and gilt thorns and leaves and a rural scene of a man carrying a bundle of sticks on his head.

This 7ft 4in x 3ft 9in (2.24 x 1.14m) Queen Anne and later walnut bureau bookcase above will feature in a large section of period furniture at Toovey’s in Washington, West Sussex, on August 10.
Guided at £2000-4000, the piece has a double-dome pediment with two arched mirror doors that open to reveal a fitted central cupboard flanked by columns and an arrangement of pigeonholes, drawers and two candle slides.
