They were made in the Scottish gunmaking workshop of John Campbell of Doune, Perthshire.

Doune pistols were a popular choice of firearm in the time, not just for highland clansmen but also for the likes of George Washington and for wealthy socialites.

These pistols, which feature three-stage barrels and elaborate engraving of scrolls, chevrons and Celtic ropework and silver inlay, sold within their $20,000-30,000 estimate at $24,000 (£18,750).
