This trademark fishing scene by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis (1855-1942), above, is among the highlights to be offered for sale at Lawrences in Crewkerne, Somerset, on January 18.

French Fishing Boat, a 7 x 11½in (17.5 x 29cm) oil on card, has been consigned from the estate of Christopher Mason and will be offered with a guide of £15,000-20,000.

Mason made a short film about Wallis in 1973 and had by that time become well-acquainted with the artistic community in Cornwall. The picture was formerly owned by Ann Stokes, wife of the artist Adrian Stokes. Another smaller painting by Wallis from the same source will be offered at Lawrences in April.

A single-owner sale of Modern British paintings and sculpture assembled over the past 50 years and valued at around £400,000 will go under the hammer at Stansted Mountfitchet auction house Sworders on January 15.

The 440-lot collection was owned by the late Barbara Holliday, who started collecting Modern British art in the early 1970s, buying at auction on regular trips to London and bringing her purchases back to hang in her Cumbrian home, The Gale.

This 2ft x 2ft 4in (61 x 71cm) oil on canvas by Cedric Morris (1889-1982) above, called The Red Pond, is dated 1932 and has provenance from the painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling.

Estimate £15,000-25,000.
