Leading the group on January 19-20 was an oil on canvas of a pair of Jack Russell terriers by Alfred Duke (1863-1905), pictured above. Titled Keeping Watch, the 11½ x 15in (29 x 38cm) oil on canvas sold for over three times the top guide at £2300.

Duke ranks among the second tier of dog painters and holds an auction record of £14,000 for Standing guard by the fireside, which sold at Christie’s London in June 1998. Born in Lancashire, the artist enjoyed considerable success during his career, profiting from the Victorian love of field sports.

In all, the 1400-lot sale at Tennants totalled just over £465,000 with 88% of lots getting away.
