Kjaer, who was born in Jutland in 1932 and has offices in London and Copenhagen, was working in the USA in the late ‘50s and ‘60s where, she says, she ‘‘ran into problems of finding furniture that would express the same form-ideas as those we employed in the buildings we designed”.

She began making her reputation as a furniture designer, including this desk produced from 1960-69 by Danish manufacturer E Pederson & Son.

The top of the 6ft (1.84m) wide desk includes Brazilian rosewood, so it was sold with a CITES article 10 certificate.

Offered at the west London rooms on January 23, it sold on the lower estimate to a private bidder at £8000.
