At 4ft 4in (1.32m) wide, it was slightly larger than the norm which, coupled with missing apron detail to the frieze, led to a conservative £400-600 estimate.
Auctioneer David Brookes expected it to do better than that – perhaps nudging into four figures – but come sale day at the Milnthorpe rooms on February 6, it sold to a dealer buying for a client at £3400.
