James & Sons Auctioneers in Fakenham, Norfolk, will offer a First World War medal group on January 31 guided at £6000-8000.

The group was awarded to Chief Gunner AE Seymour. It includes a bronze medal from the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and a scarce gold Russian Order of St Anne Medal of Distinction for Foreigners. The latter was received for action in service to Russia during the war, and showed up among the awards of both Allied and German soldiers.

The sale will also feature a group of Second World War medals awarded to Seymour’s son.

A music-themed painting owned by the late British classical soprano, Jennifer Vyvyan (1925-74), will feature in Roseberys’ Modern and Contemporary sale in West Norwood, London, on January 24.

The 22in x 2ft 6in (56 x 76cm) oil on canvas was painted by the British artist Mary Potter (1900-81).

Estimated at £10,000-15,000, it is one of two Potter pictures in the sale descended through Vyvyan’s family. Vyvyan was closely associated with Benjamin Britten, who wrote four major roles for Vyvyan’s voice and style including Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Penelope Rich in Gloriana.

William George & Co is dedicating a jewellery timed auction solely to the creations of French jewellery house Cartier.

A highlight of the select 50-lot sale, which ends on January 21, is this platinum diamond vintage brooch watch from 1912, mounted with old cut diamonds and attached to a diamond-set bar brooch.

Possibly unique, it is thought the brooch conversion was carried out by Cartier to special order, and comes in a Cartier box, also believed to be of the period. It has an opening bid of £15,000.
