Bonhams’ Travel and Exploration Sale in Knightsbridge on February 7 is led by a 19th century oil of Mexico by the British topographical painter Daniel Egerton (1797-1842).

The 2ft 5in x 3ft 3in (74cm x 1m) gilt framed painting has been in private hands since it was first exhibited at the Society of British Artists in the late 1830s, and owned by the same family for at least the last 120 years.

Titled Vera Cruz, and Castle of San Juan D’Ulloa, it is one of the limited number of oil paintings Egerton produced in London in 1836, and among the few surviving works by the artist where the location is known.

Estimate £200,000-300,000.
