Standing 3ft (92cm) tall, the white marble urn, on its 3ft 1in (94cm) high associated plinth, stayed in the Helensburgh home of the Harrison family during the June 15-16 sale.

It had undergone some restoration but, against a £3000-5000 guide, sold at £10,000 to an English dealer who will be removing it from the Harrison house ‘at his own risk’.

The vase copies the 5ft (2.52m) Athenian 1st century AD krater, now in the Uffizi, although its mythical figures are carved in high rather than bas relief.
