A Military Medal group won during one of the fiercest but least-known actions fought by British soldiers is estimated at £30,000-40,000 at Dix Noonan Webb on July 18-19.

Private DMR Walker was serving in the Korean War in April 1951 when his unit, the Gloucestershire Regiment – known as the Glorious Glosters – was overrun by a huge force of Chinese troops in the Battle of Imjin River. A 650-strong British battalion was destroyed.

He engaged in a solo shoot-out with the enemy. Slinging his Bren gun to the hip position, he sprang into position and started shooting – almost immediately he himself was hit and severely wounded, but his objective had been achieved.

Taken prisoner, he was again wounded during an American air attack, before escaping, only to be recaptured by the Communists and spending a further two years in captivity.

Walker had served under age during the Second World War in north-west Europe and was wounded.
