The ‘Oyster Perpetual’ is the pillar upon which the Rolex empire was built.

Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf invented and released the first truly waterproof case in 1926, which he called ‘Oyster’, a name Wilsdorf adopted after trying to pry open a stubborn oyster shell. Rolex’s ‘Perpetual’ automatic movement came in 1931, when the company rolled out the first reliable self-winding watch.

This vintage stainless-steel example above is guided at £400-500 at Wright Marshall in Knutsford, Cheshire, on July 14.
