An archive belonging to the Suffragette Kate Evans and consigned by her family will be offered for sale at Catherine Southon’s auction on July 25 at Farleigh Court Golf Club in Selsdon, Surrey.
Evans joined the Women’s Social and Political Union, becoming a Suffragette in her early 30s. She was arrested with nearly 150 other Suffragettes on March 4, 1912, and imprisoned for 54 days in Holloway prison.
Included in the archive is a silver Suffragette Hunger Strike medal engraved to the reverse with Evans’ name and complete with the distinctive three coloured ribbon representing purple (dignity), green (hope) and white (purity). Only 100 of these medals are known to exist. This example comes in its original velvet lined presentation box with a printed inscription to the silk-lined lid.
