The large comport on stand, above, was part of a 42-piece part-dinner and dessert service offered at Halls (19.5% buyer’s premium) in Shrewsbury on February 28.
Petit, formerly a painter for Sèvres, set up a factory with his brother at Fontainebleau in 1830, moving to Paris in 1868.
The factories are principally known for ornamental vases, statuettes and clocks: this Shrewsbury service typically painted with scenes of romantic lovers.
A number of pieces were extensively restored, keeping the estimate down to £1200-1800, but the service sold to an American private buyer at £4400.
