Artist Mario Fonseca (b.1948) and photographer Mauricio Valenzuela (b.1951) both worked in Santiago during the 1970s and ‘80s.
The exhibition, Fragmented Dialogues, runs from May 11-June 30 at the Bloomsbury gallery and is an attempt to expand the understanding of Chilean art history beyond the established ‘official’ scene through an examination of the work of these artists.
Fonseca addressed disappearances and imprisonments committed by Pinochet’s regime in his series of partially obscured mixed-media self-portraits. Valenzuela’s social documentary photographs used restrained visual narratives, shot mostly in atmospheric conditions of heavy fog and low light, capturing the country’s psychological climate of despair and oppression.
Works are priced from £3000-15,000.
