Sold at £4600 by Toovey’s (24.5% buyer’s premium) was another early manuscript, one that as the title on its vellum covers proclaimed, ‘…Contains the Rules and Orders relating to the Grammar School at Camberwell Surry’.
Earlier, 17th century content includes a 36pp vellum charter, details of the admittance of “12 poore scholars” and a list of books owned by the school.
Other material spans the years 1642- 1839 and provides minutes of meetimgs and other information relating to pupils, staff and governors.
Illustrated with 37 Woodburytype photographic plates, a copy of John Thomson and Adolpe Smith’s Street Life in London… of 1877-78, made £3200. A 1914 first of Baedeker’s Russia… with Teheran, Port Arthur and Peking sold at £480.
Featuring chromolitho illustrations of wooden, peg or Dutch doll-like figures – perhaps inspired those created by Florence Upton for the Golliwogg books – who are seen campaigning, fighting policemen, being hauled off to prison and going on hunger strike, a copy of Kathleen Ainslie’s Votes for Catherine Susan and Me of 1910 sold at £320.
