A 16½in (42cm) tall c.1880 figure carried the caveat A/F in the October 1 catalogue of Epping auction house Boningtons (22% buyer’s premium).

“The goat’s tail was off, but present, one horn was off and both were damaged and there were chips to the body,” said auctioneer Luke Bodalbhai, whose £500-800 estimate reflected the parlous condition.

As has happened at other UK sales (ATGs passim), British and German trade buyers were prepared to overlook condition for what remains an impressive and fairly rare figure. This one sold over the phone to a German dealer at £6500.
