Toklas’ inscription reads “Mitch[?] – love to dearest Bobsie from Alice” – believed to be a reference to Mrs Charles ‘Bobsy’ Goodspeed, one of whose printed presentation slips is also tipped in. It sold at a rather higher than expected $7500 (£5680) in a September 20 sale at PBA Galleries (25/20/15% buyer’s premium) in San Francisco.
