The 4ft 6in (1.37m) tall George III black-lacquered chinoiserie-decorated cabinet above was estimated at £700-900 at Mallams’ (20% buyer’s premium) auction in Abingdon on October 9 and sold at £5600.

The same sale included triple-estimate bids of £3400 for a George III rosewood library drum table and £6500 for a matched pair of mahogany Chippendale-style stools, one 18th century, one later.

Chest-on-chest

The 18th century walnut chest-on-chest also above was pitched at £300-500 at Gardiner Houlgate (20% buyer’s premium) at the September 29 Corsham sale. An ordinary example might not bring a lot more but this one, with crossbanded herringbone inlay to the drawers and standing 6ft 2in (1.99m) tall, sold at £5000.
