Pablo Picasso lithograph Figure Composée I sold for £20,000 at Bamfords on August 1.
An example from this fruitful period of Picasso’s experimentation with lithography came up for sale on August 1 at Derby saleroom Bamfords (19.5% buyer’s premium).
Figure Composée I was produced in an edition of 50 by Mourlot’s workshop in 1949 as part of a series of studies of women’s heads, inspired by his love affair with the French painter Françoise Gilot.
The 2ft 2in x 20in (65 x 50cm) lithograph, pictured above, signed in pencil by the artist, tipped over top estimate to sell for £20,000.
At Sotheby’s New York in May 2015, another print from the same set made a premium-inclusive $40,000 (£26,500) while a print from a near-identical series titled Figure Composée II sold at Christie’s in March 2013 for £35,000, also including premium.
