The sale at the dealer’s Mayfair premises (32 St George Street), will be held in association with Sovereign shareholder the Royal Mint. The inaugural auction contains 613 lots of predominately British historic issues.
It includes some very rare English coins such as a Henry VIII 23-carat gold sovereign with a provenance back to a Sotheby’s sale in 1909 when it sold to Spink for £13/10. Estimated at £25,000-30,000, this very rare issue was struck c.1544-47 as a first secretive step towards the debasement under Henry VIII.
Ian Goldbart, managing director, told ATG the plan is to hold select biannual auctions in September and May, with the firm also a partner in the ‘New York Sale’ held by a consortium of auctioneers every January as part of the New York International Numismatic Convention.
This will be the first auction involving the Royal Mint which, as part of a plan to grow its interest in the coin-collecting market, took a share in Sovereign in June 2017.
