Offered at Gildings (18% buyer’s premium) of Market Harborough in Leicestershire on September 4 was a signed limited edition print of Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Paper Pools, one of the best known from the series.
The 10 x 8½in (26 x 22cm) coloured lithograph, dated ‘80 and numbered in pencil 475/1000, came from a private collector who acquired it less than 10 years ago from the Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham.
Bidding on the internet and phone pushed the price above the £15,000- 20,000 guide to £21,000, where it was knocked down to a buyer on the thesaleroom.com.
Hockney’s pool prints are proving especially desirable on the market at present.
Will Gilding, director and auctioneer at Gildings, said: “If you had walked into the London rooms a year ago to acquire one of these works you could have bought one for £13,500 hammer price. Since then, a handful of results both sides of the Atlantic have rocketed to easily in excess of £20,000.”.

Elsewhere, topographical interest emerged for an Australian painting depicting Yering in Victoria. The 12 x 18in (30 x 46cm) oil on panel, monogrammed CN and dated 1863, was pursued to £7500 against a £100-150 guide.
Yering is now a small town some 30 miles from Melbourne and was home to one of Victoria’s first wineries.
