What do you specialise in?
My main area of expertise is in rugs from Iran – Persian rugs. For example, I recently found an old fine Balouch rug from the Mashad area in the east of Iran offered for £695. It has a vase and plant design called Zeli Sultan with a peacock sitting on top.

What are the challenges for buyers in this field?
There are fewer real experts out there who can inform and advise their buying. However, those who attend good quality fairs can be sure that they find dealers who are enthusiasts and happy to talk about their subject.

Which questions are helpful to ask when buying a rug?
I wish that more customers would ask about the details – that is, about the making, the history and the design. Knowing what the abstract shapes and symbols represent can make a piece all the more personal. That’s important since a rug becomes a significant part of the house and is often passed through the generations.

What is the most exciting aspect of your area of the market?
Although it has become more difficult to find rugs there are still a lot of great ones out there to discover.

What is an object you would love to own?
Any of the works of Paul Klee (1879-1940). He was inspired by Nomadic rugs, their prehistoric imagery and symbolism.
