Described as being in exceptional condition after a couple of centuries, the pair was estimated £200-400 at the auction on March 6 but sold to a UK buyer at £2000.

Stepping back a few weeks to Tennants (20% buyer’s premium) at Leyburn on February 9, the 288-lot Costumes & Accessories sale was led by a pair of 18th century gold and green silk brocade shoes, woven with silver threads.

Both had a couple of small holes and the fabric was worn and faded. They were offered with an associated pair of 18th century leather pattens, or overshoes, and, against a £300-500 estimate, sold to a collector at £1900.
