The 11½in (29cm) diameter bowl and companion ewer decorated with mallards were painted in green to the base T Goode & Co. London Wemyss.

The upmarket Mayfair tableware retailer Thomas Goode had the exclusive rights to sell Wemyss in England from the early years of the Fife factory until it closed in 1930.

Both pieces had small nibbles and rubbing commensurate with age but generally they were in very good condition and the £40-80 estimate at the July 13 sale always appeared to be a here-to-sell signal.

So it proved when the Wemyss pair triggered considerable interest before selling to a Welsh collector at £2500.
