News of the theft at IACF Ardingly was read by a fellow dealer who then spotted the shoe being offered at an auction house.

The French ebonised snuff shoe with brass pique pins c.1880 was stolen from the J Collins & Son stand in the Norfolk Pavilion at the West Sussex fair.

J Collins & Son proprietor Jonathan Biggs Snr said: “Due to the mention and image in the ATG, it was traced to an auction house by an antiques dealer. They have now withdrawn it and confirmed it is ours.”

The police are investigating the theft and once inquiries are complete Biggs expects to be reunited with the 4½x 1¼ x 2¼in (11.5 x 3 x 6cm) snuff shoe which has a value of £220.
