After working in Brussels for the Common Market and buying for an international fashion house, in 1972 she and her future husband launched what would become Bruce and Ingrid McAlpine Ancient Art.

From 1977, the business occupied fine premises in Brook Street opposite Claridge’s before moved to The Vale in Chelsea in the early 1990s.

Many items in the sale come from the couple’s country house, The Durdans, Epsom.

They include an Attic black-figure white ground alabastron from the 5th century BC (estimate £5000-8000) and this collection of red-figure owl skyphoi (and spouted jug) of a type associated with southern Italy, c.4th century BC.

Estimates for these are between £80-350.
