1. David James (1853-1904) achieved success as a painter of the seas around the Cornish coast and the Isles of Scilly. This coastal Cornish view, an 18in x 2ft 6in (46 x 76cm) oil on canvas of Crackington Haven, 1888, sold at East Sussex saleroom Burstow & Hewett on January 24.

2. While his brothers gained reputations as book illustrators, Richard Henry Brock (1871-1943) concentrated on painting, earning a modest income from local landscapes, mostly in oils. This 22in x 2ft 2in (55 x 67cm) canvas of a grey mare with foals sold just below top estimate at Duke’s of Dorchester on January 24.

3. Thomas Buttersworth (1768-1842) served as a seaman on HMS Caroline during the Napoleonic wars. He became a marine painter after he was invalided home from Menorca in 1800. Naval Engagement with Pirate Ship off the Dutch Coast – a signed 17in x 2ft (44 x 60cm) oil on canvas – bettered its £500-700 guide in a January 24 sale at Bristol Auction Rooms.
