How did you get your start in the art and antiques market?

My grandfather loved collecting and I enjoyed his interests and started hunting in a local antiques shop at 11. I studied interior design at art college and moved into dealing from there, with a particular love of wood.

What attracts buyers to your stock?

We have an eclectic mix here which seems to intrigue people and spark their thirst for knowledge. Generally, the story is often as interesting as the item, whether it’s 17th century needlework or a campaign chest.

How has the market changed?

When I started in the early 1970s the market was developing rapidly from a collecting market into mainstream decorating. However, it has become more of a fashion industry which has risen and fallen and changed beyond recognition, with shops, going to fairs and now the internet.

Best advice to a new collector?

Only buy what you love, not what seems cheap.

Fairs vs shops vs online?

I have always claimed you need to throw enough mud against a wall for some of it to stick. The internet has become the major vehicle in all walks of life and cannot be ignored. As for social media, I use it to a limited but increasing amount, relying on the good graces of my wife.
