The 7in (18.5cm) tall clock with a single-train fusee movement was signed James Murray, London Royal Exchange – ‘a maker of great repute’ according to clock historian GH Baillie – who provided four chronometers for James Weddell’s 1822-23 expedition to the Antarctic.

His carriage clock sold at £4000 to a bidder on the phone from the north of Scotland.
