1. As well as a portraitist, Frederick Stead (1863-1940) was a prolific painter of landscapes. This signed pastel view, probably showing Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club in the picturesque Lune Valley within the Yorkshire Dales, found a buyer within estimate at local saleroom Tennants on July 13.
2. Arthur Gaskin (1862-1928), best-known today for the Arts & Crafts jewellery he created with his wife Georgie, took inspiration from the German fairy tale The Twelve Brothers by the Brothers Grimm to create this watercolour offered at Mallams in Oxford on July 10. A finished oil painted in 1898 is in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
3. Mary Ward (1827-69) was a naturalist, astronomer, microscopist, author and artist, and alongside Queen Victoria and Mary Somerville, was on the mailing list for the Royal Astronomical Society. This posthumous oil portrait of Ward, a collaboration between Elizabeth Cambridge Harbutt (1847-1930) and Joseph Bunker (c.1800-90), dated 1882, sold at Bristol Auctions Rooms in Brislington on July 11.
