This postcard above is believed to have been penned by the English writer and poet DH Lawrence to a young woman in Nottinghamshire more than 100 years ago.
Handwritten and signed on a postcard with a picture of Old School House and Rock Cottages in Shirebrook, the correspondence is estimated at £200-250 in Hansons’ Library Auction at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire on July 31
Lawrence was far from impressed by the north Derbyshire town, which he visited in 1911. In the postcard, addressed to Miss N Holderness of a Nottinghamshire family he became acquainted with in Ilkeston, he wrote: I have got here but had to bike – not a single train. It is an awful fag. Shirebrook is a most hideous place – I contrast it with Eakring. Keep well – love to all – D H Lawrence.

More than 70 lots of Hilton’s own paintings – many of them nudes bearing her studio stamp – come from the Botallack Moor house in the west of Cornwall where she lived for 54 years, 10 of those married to the abstract painter Roger Hilton.
Noticeably influenced by Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, Hilton is best known for her post-Impressionist figurative paintings, which caught the attention of London dealer David Messum in the late 1980s and culminated in a retrospective at Tate St Ives in 2008. This 19 x 15in (48 x 37cm) oil on canvas from 2000 of standing nudes carries hopes of £300-500 at the Cornish saleroom.
