Next up, running from May 30-June 2, is the Bourgogne Tribal Show in the heart of France, staged in a rural location in Besanceuil.

The 23 dealers this year mostly offer tribal art but also include Asian, fine art, antiquities and European works of art specialists. The atmosphere is relaxed with the stands set up in the barns on the estate of Contemporary art dealer Bruno Mory. There are also links to an exhibition at the nearby Abbey of Cluny on the theme of ‘idols’ curated by Contemporary artist Coco Fronsac.

France’s main tribal art event will be staged in Paris in September when the Parcours des Mondes takes over the network of Left Bank streets around the St Germain des Près quarter for a six-day run (September 10-15).

This year, for its 18th edition, 60 Parisian and international specialists will be setting out their treasures to be met by an equally international mix of visitors and customers. The 2019 edition will be notable for an increased presence of antiquities dealers: from three last year to eight.

Belgium and beyond

Among the resident Belgian dealers exhibiting at this year’s Cultures event in Brussels is Martin Doustar. One of the pieces on show at his gallery on the rue des Minimes is this 8in (20cm) high carved wood Lower Sepik figure from Papua New Guinea which is priced at €28,000.

In Brussels from June 12-16 there will be another tribal gathering centred around the Sablon area where many of the resident dealers have their galleries.

This is part of the Cultures event which features a mix of resident and guest dealers specialising in either tribal or Asian art or antiquities. They rent space for the five-day staging or show items in their own galleries.

There are 53 exhibitors in total, of which around half, 27, are tribal specialists. Most come from France or Belgium but exhibitors from Italy, Spain, Australia and the US also attend.

Other dates for the diary include Tribal Art London, which takes place from September 4-7 just before the Parcours des Mondes, and the Tribal Art Fair Amsterdam held on October 25-27 this year.
