1. It was sketching and painting that kept Clive Madgwick (1934-2005), then a dentist, occupied while recovering from a serious bout of glandular fever in Sudbury, Suffolk. Seven works by Madgwick featured at Suffolk saleroom Clarke & Simpson on May 15 with this 11½ x 17in (29 x 44cm) oil study of Venice among the most keenly contested.
2. Edward Loxton Knight (1905-93) was a student when he produced Sandeman Port, probably his best-known image. He also created landscapes, such as this 7 x 10in (18 x 25cm) pastel drawing of the South Downs near Arundel, dated 1935, which more than doubled its top guide at Cotswold Auction Company in Cirencester on May 14.
3. It has been said that the prolific maritime artist Bernard Finegan Gribble (1872-1962) painted almost every historic event that took place on water. This oil titled Fate of the Galleon, measuring 2ft 5in x 2ft 1in (74 x 64cm), sold on top estimate at John Taylors in Lincolnshire on May 21.
