‘The Clammer’ by Andrew Newell Wyeth – $110,000 (£86,640) at Hindman.
This watercolour on paper, The Clammer, dates from c.1942 and measures 11½ x 15½in (29 x 39.5cm). It featured in Hindman’s live and online American and European Art sale in Chicago on May 23.
Privately held for almost 50 years and included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work by his wife, Betsy James Wyeth, the painting soared past its $15,000-25,000 estimate to be hammered down at $110,000 (£86,640) or $137,500 inc 26% buyer’s premium.
