This handsome pair of revivalist ormolu-mounted marquetry and parquetry commodes, formerly housed at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, are the financial stars of a sale of Fine Furniture, Carpets, Ceramics & Works of Art at Dreweatts in Donnington Priory in Newbury on June 26. Together they are estimated at £100,000-150,000.
The commodes were made by Henry Dasson (d.1896) who copied the famous series supplied by Henri Riesener to Louis XVI. Each is inlaid with centre panels of baskets and urns of flowers, quivers of arrows, fruit, eggs and butterflies in stained pearwood, and with a lattice design filled with flowerheads in kingwood, sycamore and fruitwood. They bear stamps for Henry Dasson and the London retailers S&H Jewell.
