Staffordshire honey pot
A Staffordshire slipware honey pot c.1700 decorated in a dark cream glaze with brown spots sold for £3800 (estimate £400-600) at Woolley & Wallis of Salisbury on February 19. It was lacking a cover and had a substantial crack. A similar example, with dot and wheel ornament, formed part of the Longridge collection and sold for £5000 at Christie’s King Street in May 2011.
Turner pearlware stirrup cup
Despite its obvious condition problems, a rare Turner pearlware stirrup cup modelled as a hare c.1800 sold for £1400 (estimate £200-300) at Mallams in Cheltenham on February 7. It had an impressed mark to the base. The model, seen here naturalistically painted, is also known in caneware.
English delft charger
John Nicholson’s January 24 sale in Fernhurst included this 13in (33cm) English delft blue dash charger decorated with a portrait of William III on horseback c.1690. Despite a clean break into three pieces, it took £4400 (estimate £300-500) – a reflection of the relatively rare subject matter.
A similar example in the Longridge collection sale at Christie’s New York in January 2011 took $7500.
