With only around 25 issues ever to have appeared at auction, The Beano Comic No 1 is the ‘holy grail’ for UK comics collectors.
Printed in July 1938 by publisher DC Thomson, it was the first step away from the ‘story paper’ format towards a true comic, where full-page illustrated adventures and comic strips took over from dry text stories.
This copy is estimated at £9000-11,000 in a timed auction at Comic Book Auctions closing on March 3. It is described as in ‘very good’ condition and comes with its original eight-page mini-comic flyer.

Acquired by the vendor from the artist’s family, this painting by Irish painter Norah McGuinness (1901-80) will go under the hammer at Dublin auction house Whyte’s on March 4.
Annie (1956), a signed 2ft x 18in (61 x 46cm) oil on canvas, dates from the peak of the artist’s career in the 1950s, a decade in which she represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale, had a series of successful exhibitions in Dublin and London and was made an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
Estimate €8000-12,000.
This Greek-inspired ‘Affecter Stool’ by the British designer Terence Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905-76) carries an estimate of £4000-6000 in Roseberys’ Decorative Arts from 1860 to the Present Day auction on March 5 in West Norwood, London.
The 19 x 22in (48 x 56cm) walnut and gilt bronze piece – with a woven leather cord seat on a x-shaped frame with terminating animal paw feet – was made in c.1960 as part of the Klismos line for Saridis of Athens.
The company, run by Greek furniture-makers Susan and Eleftherios Saridis, commissioned Robsjohn-Gibbings and his collaborator, Carlton Pullin, to design the Klismos line in 1960. Robsjohn-Gibbings modelled his pieces after classical Greek forms and aesthetics, which he detailed in his 1963 book Furniture of Classical Greece.
